SpaceIL is a non-profit organization established in 2011 with the aim of landing the first Israeli spacecraft on the Moon. The organization was founded by three young engineers: Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Winetraub who answered the international challenge presented by Google Lunar XPRIZE.
Although the competition officially ended with no winners on March 31, 2018, SpaceIL went on to complete the challenge, keeping in mind its major commitment: Inspiring younger generations to explore astronomy and technology, to dream big, and follow their dreams! On February 22, 2019 SpaceIL launched its spacecraft, "Beresheet," to the moon. In doing so, SpaceIL became the first privately funded group to enter the field of Space Journeys. On April 4, 2019 "Beresheet" successfully managed to complete the Lunar Orbit Insertion Maneuver, making Israel the 7th country to reach the moon and SpaceIL the first privately funded enterprise in the world to do so.
On April 11, 2019 "Beresheet" started the landing procedure as planned. During the process a malfunction caused a series of problems resulting in an engine shut down and crash-landing on the moon.
SpaceIL's achievement was applauded worldwide both by experts of space travel as well as the general public. Letters of enthusiastic support kept pouring in, enveloping the team in a warm international hug. The vision of creating an Israeli "Apollo effect" has been realized. But this a beginning, not an end.
SpaceIL's commitment to advancing the discourse on science and engineering in Israel and to acquainting young people with the exciting opportunities which STEM studies make possible stands strong. SpaceIL passionately believes in "Inspiring by Doing." Thus, the team continues to plan the next journey to the moon as it plants the seeds to prosperity for engineers, dreamers and "Doers" that will make the next generations of dreams possible!
